When I Want To Do Right: Romans 7: 13-25
Summary of Sermon
This is a passage about life once one is saved. There is a battle between the new man and the old man. Here Paul, via the leadership of the Holy Spirit lays out an honest look at the battle we have to live with until Jesus comes to get us or we go to Him.
13-14, the depth of my sinfulness—many of us who are saved confessed our sins to God, told Him we were sorry and asked Him to forgive us. I did this as a 14-year-old young man in Barbados. One night at an outdoor meeting I asked Jesus to forgive me for my sins and save me; He did. But I truly did not understand the depths of my own sinfulness until long after I was saved. The Holy Spirit moves in and He begins to shed light into all my dark places. Paul as a Pharisee would not have thought himself be that much of a sinner, but once He met Jesus that all changed.
15- 20, no matter how hard I try I cannot stop sinning. I want to do good, but sin is there knocking at the door, and all too often I sin out of habit. My flesh is my enemy and it haunts me.
21-23, whenever I long to do good, sin is there. My flesh betrays me. I can never get away from it. I long to do good. I want to do good and do right, but evil is ever present in me.
24-25, only Jesus can deliver me. The ‘body of the death’ refers to an ancient execution where they would tie a dead man to a living man, and of course, the dead man begins to rot and kill the living man. You and I as children of God, new people, have a dead man strapped to our backs. He is rotting and dying and trying to kill us. BUT Jesus will deliver us, one day that dead flesh will be no more and we will have a new body to match our new inner man. One day our bodies will no longer betray us but will love to do good.
