What Happens When God Gives up on a People - Romans 1:16-32

Summary of Sermon

This is a hard lesson to teach especially on the back of the previous week’s lesson that ‘Everything Will be Alright’. Paul's writing here lays down some heavy things for us to consider as a rebellious society comes to its natural end as it continues to rebel against God.

Paul lays out the foundation of all truth, in verses 16-17—salvation is of, by and through Jesus and we who speak the truth, in love, should not be ashamed of the truth. Paul then goes on the lay out what happens to a people who abandon God, turn on Him and begin to spitefully worship anything but God:

Vs 24, God gave them up to uncleanness, these are people who changed the truth of God into a lie and worship the creation rather than the Creator.

Vs 26, God gave them over the vile affections, these are seen when men and men have sexual relations and women turn to other women; now this has always been around, as far back as Genesis. But when it becomes widely accepted and even promoted as the norm and not the fringe of society, this is when it takes over. Soon, man and woman sex become unaccepted and even despised. We can see this happening right now.

Vs 28, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, always thinking evil. Paul goes on to lay out the manner of evil that will take over men’s minds see verses 29-30. We can literally listen to the news and see how evil has taken over the world.

As God’s people, we cannot be abandoned, God cannot leave us nor forsake us. But we will see and are seeing what happens when a people abandon God and then He, in turn, removes His hand of protection from them. Lord help us, your children.
