True Worship - Zechariah 7:1-14
Summary of Sermon
In this passage, the return from Babylon is well underway. Zechariah has overseen the rebuilding of the Temple and now the people are ready to worship. While they were in Babylon, they used to keep certain rituals and one of them was to fast and be sorrowful in the fifth month of each year. God asks a question, ‘Did you fast for Me?’ Then God points out that what He really wants is obedience, not religious rituals. The highest form of worship is obedience, not ritual.
God points out that the way you treat people, to treat them with integrity, kindness and grace, to take care of the needy, to be generous and truly minister to people is more important than rituals. This teaching is backed up by Zechariah 7: 8-10, James 1: 21-27, Micah 6:8, Luke 10:27, and we can go on and on. God wants us to love Him with all our strength and then love each other the same way; this is true worship.
