The Resurrection Mark 16:1-15
Summary of Sermon
The resurrection is the most important day in the history of Christianity. Without it, nothing else matters. Without it, we have no hope and according to Paul, we are a most miserable people. The death, burial and the resurrection of Jesus lend credibility to all of the other Biblical statements like creation, the birth of Jesus and any other Biblical things.
Mark was the earliest of the New Testament writings and he gives a summary account of the events that followed the resurrection. One of the things that we see is the unbelief that was rampant amongst the disciples and apostles. The women mentioned Mary and her cohorts went to anoint a dead body, they did not expect Jesus to be alive. Once they had been told he was alive, they relayed the information to the 11, and they did not believe either. God sent the 2 from Emmaus Road and even with extra witnesses, the 11 did not believe. Jesus eventually shows up and calls out their unbelief.
But in verse 7, Jesus specifically tells the ladies to tell the others and Peter. He singles out Peter. We know that Peter had failed Jesus; he had denied him to His face and he was feeling defeated. Jesus took special care to address Peter and call him back to the ministry, see John 21. Maybe your faith has been rocked by some failure of your own, don’t be afraid, Jesus can and will still use you if you will come back to Him.
