The Quiet Life- 1 Thessalonians 4: 9-12
Summary of Sermon
Many people in our time want to be famous. They do just about anything to be famous. But as Paul is writing to the Thessalonian church, he encourages the people there to seek a quiet life. He begins this part by reminding the church about their love for each other. Their love is known and shown in the churches throughout Macedonia. Paul is excited about this, there are countless verses that tell us that the way we love each other is the true testimony of our transformation through Jesus.
Paul then encourages that they have the ambition to lead a quiet life. Be famous in heaven, that fame lasts, don’t worry about fame and riches here, they don’t last and you can’t take them with you. Love each other, and lead a quiet life. Stay out of other people’s business, you have enough in your life to keep you busy. If someone needs help, help. But don’t pry into their lives. If they want you to know, they will tell you.
Lastly, work with your hands, work. The Greek culture decried hard work and thought that the more prominent a person was the less work they should do. In contrast, Jesus came as a Carpenter, many of the apostles were fishermen, others tent makers, Matthew was a tax collector, and in the OT Moses was a shepherd as was David, we can go one. God tends to call people who are already working. So, work hard, take care of your family and if you do all these, you will have a good testimony among the people around you.
