The Last Day Part 1 -John 13–19
We will be exploring the last day of Jesus’ earthly ministry in detail over the next few weeks as we approach Easter. John 13–19 covers the final day that Jesus is here teaching His disciples, and this night He will teach two very important lessons that the Lord’s churches need to hear.
Good leaders are, first and foremost, good servants. Jesus has His meal, and after it is done, He puts on the garb of a servant, the foot washer, the lowest job, and washes the disciples’ feet, as He explains in John 13:12–17. We are to recall that it is not beneath us to serve. Rather, it is the highest calling in the Lord’s work. In Philippians 2:1–5, we are told Jesus took on the form of a servant and came to die for us on the cross. The pastor is not a king, nor is he to be worshipped, but true godly men are first of all good servants at home and church.
Jesus also deals with the security of the believer. There are two apostles named in the passage: Peter and Judas. Peter is going to deny the Lord that night, but he is saved. Jesus tells us this in John 13:9–11. Peter is clean all over, but as we journey in this world, we will sin; thus, it is necessary for us to ‘wash our feet’, confess sin
(1 John 1:8–9), and have our spiritual feet washed. We do not stop being saved. The other apostle that is named is Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin. He, we are told, was never saved; Jesus said he, Judas, was not clean. Thus, we see, that no amount of foot washing could help Judas; he needed to be saved, and no amount of failure could stop Peter from being saved, even denying Jesus to His face (John 18:15–27).
