The Greatest Gift Ever: Hebrews 9:11-28

Summary of Sermon

As we get closer and closer to the Christmas celebration there are a lot of ways that the Gospel is being shared. Far too many people only remember the Babe in a manger, they do not call to mind the Savior on the cross. But in Hebrews here, Paula reminds us of the Greatness of Jesus' gift to us.

The Greatness of the Blood, vs 12, with His own blood – there has been a concerted effort over the past few years to sanitize the Gospel. It is too violent. God cannot be this harsh. But all through the Bible from Genesis 3:21 to the day Jesus died, God has clearly shown that bloodshed was the only way to appease His wrath over sin. Jesus’ blood was the last blood to ever be shed for mankind.

The Greatness of Jesus Death, His death was necessary, verse 16 – Jesus had to die to seal the new covenant. When God gave the nation of Israel the Old Testament Law, they killed bulls and lambs to seal that old covenant. But the new covenant needed to be sealed as well, and Jesus did that with His death. He died so that we do not have to fear death.

The Greatness of Jesus – vs 26- He died once for all, - over the years from the giving of the law in Exodus, millions upon millions of animals had to be sacrificed to temporarily cover our sins. But Jesus died once, only once, for all of our sins and as many as put their trust in Him, have their sins removed forever.

This the Gospel, the Babe in the manger became the God/Man on the cross, taking my and your punishments so we can have eternal life in Him and fellowship with God the Father.
