The Greater the Sinner; The Greater the Love - Luke 7: 36-50

Summary of Sermon

There are three other accounts that seem just like this one in the other Gospel. But those apply to Jesus as He is preparing for His death. This account happens further up in His ministry and is a show of love.

This woman had to humble herself and come into a Pharisee’s home (filled with men), she was known to be a ‘great’ sinner and she came in with her head uncovered (she used her hair to dry Jesus’ feet). Jesus permits her to do as she is doing, an act of worship. This is Jesus telling us He is God. Neither the Apostles nor angels would allow men to worship them. But Jesus allowed worship.

Jesus used this event to teach all of us a lesson; how we perceive ourselves will determine how much we love the Lord. The Pharisee did not see himself as that bad of a sinner, he sinned, but not like this woman. This ‘great sinner’ that he would not even allow in his home in normal circumstances. But he wanted to see what Jesus would do. This dear woman understood she was a great sinner and as such, she loved Jesus because she understood that she did not deserve His kindness, grace and forgiveness. You and I have to decide, are we the Pharisee or the woman? Are you a ‘nominal sinner or a ‘great’ sinner? When we understand that according to Romans 3, we are all ‘great’ sinners, then we will first love Jesus more and then we will love each other more as well.
