The Christmas Storm: Matt 1:18-25
Summary of Sermon
Cows and buffaloes handle storms very differently; when storms approach the animals can smell them. Cows run from the storm, they run as hard as they can but eventually run out of steam and the storm catches them. Now they are at the mercy of the storm, they never outrun it and simply have to wait for the storm to die. Buffalo run at the storm, they take it head-on and run through it. Eventually, they run past the storm and only reap the benefits of the storm; clean water, fresh greenery and the like. A very different ending than the cows.
When God made man, He knew the costs involved. When Adam sinned God could have simply started again, but when you give people ‘free will’, you cannot guarantee the outcome. The next man could have sinned the same way Adam did; then what. Do you just keep starting over? So, God made a plan to run right at the sin problem. He sent Jesus. This is the Christmas story.
Man’s Way
We are like the cows, we run from dealing with sin. We try to ignore it, compromise for it and even make it legal in man’s laws, but sin like the storm just keeps coming and destroying everything in its path. In Romans 1: 18-32 we see that. Sin keeps taking and taking and so on, all we think of is evil, we promote evil and we become completely controlled by it. Sin destroys our society, destroys our families and erodes all our love, hope and faith.
God’s Way
God sent Jesus to deal with our sins, Galatians 4: 4-7. Jesus took our sins away forever with his death, burial and resurrection. God took on our sin head-on, He ran into the storm for us. As we become children of God we are told to put on the whole armour of God, Ephesians 6: 10-15, notice there is no covering for the back. We too are called to face evil head-on in Jesus’s power. By tackling sin head-on, we are able to sustain our societies, strengthen our families and embolden our faith, live in true hope and love like Jesus.
God took the storm on for us, that one night a long time ago, a little baby born in Bethlehem came and took sin on for us. He ran at the storm, defeated death, and conquered the grave and one day we will see all that God intended for us, even as we can get a little glimpse now as we wait for Him.
