Summary of Sermon

Everyone will begin today with resolutions—often something to do with weight loss or getting fitter. Others will want to spend more time with family or travelling, all kinds of resolutions. As God’s people, we should have a few goals as well—in the book of James we find some doable ones that we can all apply:

We should crave Godly wisdom. We should want to make it a point of knowing God’s word. Reading, studying and re-reading God’s word. You will never get to the end.
Work at sinning less. We will not be sinless on this side of eternity, but we can discipline ourselves to sin less and to make better choices. Maybe not put ourselves in a place to be tempted.

One way to sin less is to become more and more obedient to God’s word. This takes us back to step one; we need to read and study God’s word so we know what to obey.

We should never forget who we are; sinners saved by grace. Let us be merciful and gracious to each other. One of the most important things we can learn is to be humble at all times. We should always assume we are the lowest in every room. Paul thought he was the chief sinner. Most of us would argue with him that he did not know us.

Learn to shut up! A child of God does not need to say everything that comes into our brains. Restraining the tongue is one of the most mature and spiritual disciplines that we can do. Words can hurt and they can kill a person long before they are dead. In the same breath, words spoken at the right time can breed life.

Don’t be afraid of the lowly and the needy. Help the ones that can’t help you back. This is what Jesus did for us on the cross. Never forget that Jesus associated with sinners so he could save us and give us what we could not get ourselves. Never forget that.
