Lord, Why Am I Alive? - Job 3
Summary of Sermon
This comes after all the catastrophes of the first 2 Chapters. Job had gone through so much pain and grief and the goal, of course, was to get him to ‘curse God to his face’, Job 1:10. Satan wanted to get Job to curse God. As we get into chapter 3, Job is speaking to God and in this chapter, he curses the day of birth, that God let him live once he was born and questioned why he was still alive. But in all of this, he never curses God.
Verses 1-10, Why was I even born?
Job wishes he had never been born. The pain is too much, the loss too much, the mental and spiritual stress too much. He is broken and wishes he simply had never been born. Maybe you have been there as well. You have some suffering, some pain, some trial that is breaking you, and you wish you never existed.
Verse 11-19 – Why did I not die at Birth?
Okay, I had to be born, why let me live past that? It would be better if I was dead. The dead do not feel pain, they do not hurt and suffer. Please remember that this is not a doctrinal passage, he is using Hebrew poetic structure and license to speak here. Yes, we know the dead without Christ are not at peace. But Job is simply saying that the physical body feels no pain if you are dead.
Verse 20- 26 - Why Am I alive?
Job feared that God had left him, and turned his back on him. Maybe he, Job, has sinned one too many times, failed God one sin too far and God has stopped blessing him and was now his enemy. This was not the case, we see that God vindicates Job to his friends, blesses him with 10 more children and doubles his material wealth. Beyond that, we have an eternal story of how a man can be broken, hurt and destroyed, and yet, never cursed God. Always give God the benefit of the doubt, if there is a reason to have a loss, it is normally our fault, not God’s doing.
