Jesus, Our Substitute (John 18:1–11, 39–40)
Jesus, Our Substitute (John 18:1–11, 39–40)
Today, many preachers will be preaching Easter sermons, and most of us here know the story of the resurrection. But as we have been exploring the day before Jesus’ execution in the last few weeks, this week we come to these two stories of the night before and the day of Jesus' death.
Peter, with whom we are very familiar, cut off the ear of one of the temple guards, a man named Malchus. Jesus immediately heals the man and puts his ear back on. The penalty for touching a temple guard was death, and trying to kill one was even more criminal, but Jesus removed all of the evidence of Peter’s crime, and the ear was restored. Jesus, by taking your sin and mine to the cross, has offered us the opportunity to have all of our sin evidence removed. We can have His righteousness cover us, and any evidence of our sin will be covered.
In the case of Barabbas, he woke up that morning expecting to die; he was supposed to be the man on the middle cross. But the people wanted Jesus dead. And so they chose Barabbas, the insurrectionist and murderer, over Jesus, who had raised the dead, healed the sick, and given sight to the blind. Jesus took his place willingly, the perfect for the imperfect, the life giver for the life taker, and the sinless for the sinful. We are all Barabbas; we, like him, deserve death, but Jesus took our place.
