Humility: The Gateway to God - 2 Samuel 7:18-22

Summary of Sermon

David was known as a great king, a warrior, truly a legend and also as ‘a man after God’s own heart’. He was a humble man and this endeared Him to God. In our text, if you read the previous verses, he is determined to build God a Temple, a house and move the Ark of the Covenant into the Temple from the Tabernacle. But God prohibits him and also promises to let someone from his lineage rule on the throne of Israel forever. We know that promise will be fulfilled in Jesus. David comes into the Tabernacle sits before God and asks the question, ‘Who am I?’ The answer is no one, just a nobody, but God is all, He is great and He is everything.

The Bible reminds us that we are weak and our frame is just dust, Psalm 103: 13-14, Job 10:9; we are told how short life is in James 4:14, 1 Peter 1:24, Psalm 39: 4-13. God is eternal and our life here is short and fleeting. We are weak and without the Lord, we would not have any victories at all.

God loves the humble, He embraces the humble and distances Himself from the proud, 1 Peter 5: 5-6, Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. You want to be closer to God and feel and know His presence, then humble your self and like David ask ‘Who am I?’. The answer is nobody.
