Going Beyond Deut 22:1-4, Matthew 5: 41-48
Summary of Sermon
As we get closer and closer to the time when we will have to give an answer to the Lord for our lives, my life, I begin to see these verses in different ways.
Going Beyond for my neighbour/brother in the Lord. In Deuteronomy 22, we are asked to look out for the property of our brother. We are to take responsibility for his ox, sheep, goat and even a garment that is lost. We are to care for the animal or the garment until it can be safely returned to the owner. We are not to turn away from the responsibility and shirk it.
Going Beyond for a stranger or an enemy, in Matthew. We are to go the ‘extra mile’ for our enemies even. We are not to retaliate and even go further to treat our enemies well. God asks us to go beyond and to show the true character of Jesus in us as the Holy Spirit changes us into the image of Jesus.
We are going to give an account one day of how we treated our brothers/neighbours and also our enemies.
