Do You Have a Reason to Rejoice - Luke 10: 17-24

Summary of Sermon

As we check out the context, we see that Jesus had sent these 70 men to minister to the people of Israel in cities all over the Israeli area. They went out and did great things and now they have returned to Jesus, rejoicing over the things they did.

They had power over snakes and scorpions and even had power over demons to cast them out of people. These nobodies, men who had never had power in their lives all of a sudden were powerful and they had good reasons to rejoice.

But Jesus, not to burst their bubble, reminded them that the real reason to rejoice was because their names were written in heaven. Is your name written in the Kingdom? In Hebrews 12:23, we see that we should be ‘enrolled in heaven.

to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

Are you enrolled in Heaven? If so, then do you have a real reason to rejoice? Jesus knew that these gifts He gave these men, these powers were temporary and if this was their reason for rejoicing, their rejoicing would fade as well. But since our true source of rejoicing is that we are saved in Jesus, washed in His blood and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, then we can rejoice. Do you have a reason to rejoice?
