Christian Maturity: Job 1:1-22
Summary of Sermon
This is the oldest book that we can think was recorded in the scriptures. There is no mention of Abraham or Israel in the book. Lest we think of him to be a fictional character God mentions him in Ezekiel 14:14, in the same verse as Daniel and then he is mentioned again in James in the New Testament.
Job has a charmed life, filled with a large family, lots of livestock and servants. We then shift to a world that we cannot see, an audience in Heaven between God and the ‘Ben Elohim’, the angels. Satan is among them and we can see there is dialogue and interaction.
God brings up Job and his faithfulness, he is thrice described as a blameless (not sinless) man, one who shuns evil and fears God. The events of Job did not come because Job was evil, but rather because he was faithful. Satan has powers, we see him in sighting armies to attack, using wind to knock over a building and calling fire down from heaven to kill. But his power is limited, in chapter one, he was not allowed to touch Job’s body.
Job understands that God can do anything He wants with His own, see verses 20-22. God has every right to add and/or take from us. Job did not blame god or accuse Him of being sinful.
