Be Careful Who You Are Friends With – 2 Chronicles 18

Summary of Sermon

In this account of an event in the lives of Ahab king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, God show us some lessons about being careful to whom you pledge help. In this story, Ahab asks Jehoshaphat to go to war with him. Jehoshaphat has already had his son marry Ahab’s daughter (chp 21). Jehoshaphat agrees to go to war but wants to ask for wisdom from God.

Ahab seeks counsel from the prophets of Baal, but Jehoshaphat wants to hear from God. Worldly people seek a different kind of advice than God’s people do.

You may not know when God will judge that person, and you may find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Neither of the kings knew that God was planning to kill Ahab that day.

Sometimes your ‘friend’ will set you up to fail. Ahab asked Jehoshaphat to put on his kingly garb, but Ahab did not. This made Jehoshaphat a target, but God knows how to do the job and Ahab died anyway.

Your association can cause issues down the line because Jehoshaphat’s son married Ahab’s daughter, he was an evil king and undid a lot of the good his father did.

The Bible says not to be ‘unequally yoked’, in this context it means not to marry an unsaved person. But in the broad application, it means not aligning ourselves with people not governed by God, whether in marriage, friendship and/or businesses and even causes.
