A Lifestyle of Thanksgiving – Colossian 3:12-17
Summary of Sermon
This past weekend we celebrated Thanksgiving here in Canada. It is always a time of fun, family and good food. But thankfulness is to be an essential part of the Christian’s daily walk. Sadly, too many of us are not as thankful as we could be or should be and this has a negative effect on our daily lives. Being a thankful person is a fruit of other discipline in the Christian life and here, Paul lays out some discipline for our consideration.
The context in Colossians 3:1, begins, ‘since’ we have been raised with Christ—this the premise for the following teachings, we who are saved and raised with Christ need to pay attention and learn these; Pau encourages us in verse 12 to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, we are to be a forgiving people one to another.
We are called in verse 14 to ‘put on’ like an overcoat and let the ‘peace of Christ’ live in us. These all set the foundation for us to be thankful. The more kind we are, the more thankful we will be, the more patient we are the more thankful we will be, on and on we can lay this out. When we truly love each other and seek the truly live peaceably with one another, we become more and more thankful. Eventually, thankfulness becomes a natural part of our daily life and existence.
